How to Make a DIY Wedding Cake (featuring Tali Babes)

I am so excited because I had a very special guest in the studio, the gorgeous, fabulous Tali babes!

Not only is she getting married (so lucky) but she also has her own show on Showmax, that follows her on the journey leading up to her Wedding day!! That is why I decided to make a DIY wedding cake to help her be a bit more creative when planning her special day.

Beside, why spend thousands and thousands on a cake when you can do it yourself!

You will need:

  • 4 x Cakes! (Store-bought)
  • White butter cream icing (I make mine with white margarine so it isn’t too yellow)
  • Chocolate ganache
  • A squeezy bottle
  • 2 circular plates or trays
  • A packet of marbles
  • A plastering tool
  • White chocolate
  • Bubble wrap
  • Meringues, mini donuts, and other toppings
  • Roses
  • And edible gold paint

Let’s get started!

Start by making a lazy Susan out of the two trays and your marbles. So we can spin our cake as we decorate. Clever hey?

Let’s stack the cakes!

Start by piping some icing onto each layer of cake and stacking them up. You can stick a skewer into the middle to help support it.

Pipe a line of icing onto the top and onto the outside of your cake. Slowly scrape your icing around using your pallet knife – this is very on trend hey. Its called a naked Cake.

Tali thinks this look is quite “done” but I love it!

Now we’re ready to decorate. First things first we gonna make some drips. My best friend Marianne loves drips. This is also very en vogue at the moment. These drips. I’ve seen it on the blogs and in the magazines.

Using a squeezy bottle, drip your chocolate ganache onto the top of the cake, and let it drip down the sides.

Let’s make golden shards of honeycomb chocolate! Spread some melted white chocolate onto your bubble wrap. Once it has dried, break into shards and paint with your edible gold paint.

Now we stack on our decorations.
Shards … Meringues … roses … and little frosty doughnuts .. Also very on trend hey. So decadent

And there you have it. A DIY wedding cake that doesn’t break the bank! I mean I am blinded by this cake! DIY? Because anybody can.
